Filling in the Background / Setting the Scene

Having had my imagination 'fired' with the recent purchase of the Skytrex Low relief buildings, I set about trying to set the scene for my latest re-incarnation of Alter Loskchuppen, My Lenz O Gauge/ Spur 0 layout.

As these buildings are low relief, it allows me modellers licence potential to infill a large part of the back ground scenics.These Skytrex O Gauge additions allow me to set the scene with some degree of industry, effectively adding more 'purpose' to the layout.

Like all resin cast items, once painted, these small detail objects will really come to 'life' when painted and weathered.

My Vision or should I say......Imagination !

In my modellers 'minds eye', I see Alter Lokschuppen set in an old industrial setting on the edge of a town, bordering countryside. As with all my Alter Lokschuppen layouts, the theme is still a 'Preservation ' one, where I can use modern vehicles, people figures, infrastructure with older Era III stock provided by Lenz.

The factory I propose, is a historical factory / warehouse structure that has long since closed..

At some time in the past it had its own sidings for goods delivery and despatch as well as by road transport.

Falling into disrepair, a developer / builder has now aquired the site, and is now in the process of extensive re-building work,and separating the factory into smaller industrial units.

This rebuilding / devlopment, will allow me huge modellers licence to display various stages of the process, and with it , enormous potential for detailing / weathering.

I have to say, I have never before painted and weathered any resin cast buildings, so this will be another challenge for me to discover and hone new skills..and I am looking forward to it too !

As can be seen below, some items are 'recycled' from my previous layouts.

Loose fitted / trialled in situ is my portakabin, in the main factory area.

This is the builder / developers site office, where deliveries of various Skytrex building materials are delivered / stored.

This 'mini theme' allows me even more diorama potential for detailing, and also opportunity to use some delivery vehicles and make a car park area too.

I do like options !

As the factory originally had some railway connection / sidings, at some stage my local DB preservation group aquired some of the adjacent factory land and built the lokshed facility.

More than 'just' playing trains !

With the imagination now fired, the scene is set and everything seems to now have more 'purpose'.

However, more importantly for me, it has many options and challenges ahead for me to discover and hone new skills with my modelling.

As I have said many times before, model railways are more than just trains.. there is huge potential for modelling as well as 'playing' with trains.

Skytrex Low Relief Resin Buildings

My Skytrex Low Relief Buildings order arrived earlier in January 2011so I set about trialling where they would go on my main layout lokshed board..

The addition of various Skytrex detailing items, illustrates how one can plan the rest of the layout.

I feel the addition of these items, give the total layout more 'purpose' and a first for me, more of an industrial feel / background.

Introducing Skytrex to My Lenz O Gauge Layout

Regular followers of Alter Loskchuppen, My Lenz O Gauge / Spur 0 Layout will have noticed various small scenic items, I have added / used throughout all my Alter Lokschuppen layouts.

Skytrex are a UK supplier, specialising in high quality resin cast models and detailing items for various model genres.

However, my specific interest is with their O Gauge / 7mm railway products, that will suit any O Gauge / Spur 0 model railway layout.

The detailing items produced may easily fit an O Gauge Layout from almost anywhere in the world.

The range of Skytrex products is very large and in my experience, of consistently high quality, testament to their production methods and quality control. (In my view,other suppliers could learn lessons !)

Delivery service is excellent,as is their entire on line order process.

Just before Christmas 2011, I ordered a few items that I had never seen before..

Skytrex Low Relief Building Facades

These were new to me, and as I was looking for something to 'fill' the background on Alter Lokschuppen, I thought I'd have a looksee.

Rarely, have I been so impressed with a scenic item, these factory units were quite superb and immediately 'fired my imagination'. ( So much so,I ordered a lot more !)

I chose the Skytrex Northlight Factory/ Warehouse range, as I felt it would sit equally at home on a UK layout or like mine a German based layout.

This range is available in numerous variants, single storey double units, single units with office or loading bays and the same items as 2 storey levels, and recent additions of other matching deeper buildings.

This range is essentially, Low Relief, and ideal for filling a backscene or corner of any O Gauge Layout.

The mouldings are very well detailed and the detailing is nice and crisp.

They have very little flash which is limited to a thin skin covering on the windows, which is easily removed.Window frames are well executed as are the built in drain pipes, hopper and vents.

Loosely placed in situ at various location, the scenic idea's started to flow and a further much larger order was placed.

These look great, and have huge potential for scenics on my Lenz O Gauge Layout, together with the addition of other scenic detail items from the Skytrex range..

The Pit ( part 4) in situ

Work continues on My Lenz O Gauge/ Spur 0 Layout.

A suitable 'slot' was cut into my lokshed baseboard surface, to allow the pit to be sunken, when attached permanently to the lokshed floor itself.

I have not yet made this permanent, as I feel it will be easier for me to work on the lokshed structure when its supported on my workbench rather than in situ on the baseboard.Hence the pit isn't yet wired up / connected to electical supply.

Once in place though, I decided it was slightly too deep.. so am now preparing a flase floor to raise it a ittle.

The Pit ( part 3) painting & detailing

The walls and floor were spray painted with white acrylic primer.

As the parts are mdf, this paint is absorbed and dries very quickly.

Addition of a dirty paint wash and some weathering powders soon start to improve the original 'clinical' look .

Adding an electrical conduit along one wall,disguises the joint between the two wall components.

Again, the addition of small detailing parts, fire extinguishers and my home made decals/ transfers continue to add to the scene.

Below: the inspection pit dry fitted in situ beneath the track inside the Alter Lokschuppen lokshed on my Lenz O Gauge layout.

Still a long way to go, much more detailing / weathering etc to be done, before I get to secure / glue the pit to the lokshed floor.

The Pit (part2) Illumination !

As I wanted my Alter Lokschuppen inspection pit illuminated, I had to give this some thought.

I decided on the use of some very small LED units.

These were supplied in a strip that could be cut into units of 3 leds.

Once these were separated , they were then re-spaced and feed wires added to each unit.

These were then measured and a series of small holes drilled in both the inspection pit side walls.

Fortunately, the small leds, fitted perfectly into the drilled holes, and instantly transformed the appearance of the pit.

Sadly, yet another example of poor quality control in certain parts of this kit.

It's these failures that makes aspects of this kit a disappointment, and inexcusable in my view.

Note the inspection pit components below.

The two upper parts are the floors of the 2 supplied inspection pits..

As can be seen the quality and depth of the engraved brickwork varies hugely between these two components, and quite frankly, should have been picked up when the kit was packed.

Anyway, I am only having one such inspection pit, so I could use the deeper / better engraved floor component.
Below are the inspection pit walls. posed with my Preiser man for scale.. these, in my opinion are too shallow , for anything other than an ash pit.

As I chose to make my Timber Tracks Engine shed only a single road within My Lenz O Gauge layout, then I could effectively 'double' the depth / heigh of these walls into something more sensible, though the overall depth will still require reducing.

Of course, the increase in depth, means more 'steps' .. I used all the supplied timber step pieces, and the extra were fashioned from other mdf parts that I was not going to use on the roof.

The floor part was glued to one wall, and the steps cut and glued into place. The final wall part simply 'interlocks' with the aforementioned assembled parts.

Trial fitted in situ, it looks quite effective.

The final assembly is dry fitted, as it will require painting, weathering , detailing and the addition of lighting.

A Little Illumination

This first picture is a little 'daftness' on my part really... but I have cobbled together ( as yet incomplete) smoke hood for the vents / chimney stacks that pop up through the roof. ;o)

Lighting / Illuminating the way:

On my previous Alter Lokschuppen layouts, I experimented with LED's for the interior lighting..
With this new layout, I wanted something much more discreet than the original led strips I used.

It took me some time to source these, but they are strips of SMD 's 'surface mounted diodes' these are tiny compared to my previous lighting units, so will do the job very nicely.
I still continued with the warm white colouring as its nicer for the camera shots and easier on the eyes.

They are mounted on a flexible tape, but this needed more support, so I mounted them on platicard strips.
The circuit boards were then painted , just leaving the SMD's exposed.

The new lights allow the internal details to be viewed and photographed with ease.

Much more discreet too.. and very effective from outside the building!

The old original large size LED strips were cut and used within the mess room.
These will be operated with a separate switch, eventually

Much neater, more discreet, and better lighting overall.. I am delighted with this now.. ( pun intended !)

Conker and roof detailing

You may have noticed in earlier posts, that during assembly of the lokshed on My Lenz O Gauge Layout, I had already sprayed the floor area a sort of beige /concrete. This was simply the base coat and is from a textured aerosol spray. The entire floor area has now been reworked extensively with varous MIG weathering powders and washes.. its not yet been matt varnished, so will also get darker still.

Also, there may be comments about the rails and chairs being 'above ground level ' well, I did consider building up the floor level, but felt this looked better..

It's my trainset... and all that... ;o)

Suitable rubber tyre marks from the forklift truck have also been added to the scene.

The Buffer stop has yet to be detailed, painted and weathered too.

Okay, so I get bored easily... I try to complete 'mini project' or task whenever I work on My Lenz O Gauge Layout 'Alter Lokschuppen'., but some are too big to handle in one session.

I also like the variety my modelling subject / theme allows me.. to undertake many different aspects.

The roof is up next, I continued to make this even more 'European' , by not using the original kit provided tiles.

I wanted to show a sheeted metal style of roofing, which meant adding 1mm x 1mm square styrene plastic strips

Model Railways can be like Dolls Houses

I make no apology for the post title 'Model Railways can be like dolls houses' because in my view they can be, even more so in these larger scales.

The reason I say this, is because the lokshed in My Lenz O Gauge layout 'Alter Lokschuppen' is a structure, just the same as a dolls house.. and personally, I have immense pleasure in planning, designing and building the interior of it.

Further, the ability to have a viewing wall and / or part of the roof removeable enhances my view and indeed pleasure.

Once this layout is finished..( are they ever ?) I will have the potential to change certain detailing aspects within and outside the lokshed for the camera.

Being a life long modeller, of many many genres.. from plastic kits, to model railways ( all gauges) to radio control models, I have much respect to anyone who models any genre, and some dolls houses I have seen are incredibly detailed and reflect many hours of dedication, skill and passion.. Are model railways any different ?

One of my prized skills, learned from my modelling friend and guru Rich, is the ability to scale and make my own decals / transfers. The addition of transfers to any structure adds terrific detailing, so much better than simply 'sticking printed paper' to walls etc.. The transfer paper is waterslide and beds into any detailing on the surface, just as it does with plastic modelling.

Given the 'theme' through all of my Alter Lokschuppen Layouts, has been modern day preservation, I have been able to use the same computer file throughout.

I do enjoy adding / placing small detailing items, to see what looks best through the camera lens,before securing anything with glue. ( Can you see my Dolls House theory now ?)

More detailing takes place, with the addition of electrical conduit, ( from Preiser) fabulous.. but quite expensive for the contents in the box..

Various small items added too.. additional pipework and brackets, fire extingushers work benches and even more detail items on those too.

The bright red 'Snap On ' tool boxes and other items are from a 1/43 scale model car supplier..

See... how different genres of modelling can cross and integrate with each other.. Be open minded.. and continually looking for items..

Internals & messing about

Some items have 'survived' from previous Alter Lokschuppen layouts and its fun seeing if they will be incorporated into the new layout. My (incomplete) scratch built inspection platform is one such item.

A decision on this will be made, much later in the build

As I now have much greater scope and room within the lokshed, I decided to add a small mess room structure for the Alter Lokschuppen staff / employees. I am also constructing a small mezzanine floor above for storage.

As I have said many times before, there are some aspects of this Timber Tracks Two Road Engine Shed that are really excellent..One such element is the huge windows, these are fabulously laser cut from ply, and are incredibly filigree/ fine.They are a superb friction fit into the side wall orifices too.. as are the laser cut glazing acrylic .
These are covered both sides with protective film which acts as a mask.
I chose to paint the windows separately and eventually the glazing panels will mounted on the outside.. as seen below.

At this stage, I also gave the walls a 'wash' to give them a dirtier /used effect / look.

Openings and doors

Well, following my issues with the openings and track spacing, and the new differing apertures, my thoughts turn to the doors..

As supplied, the kit comes with two sets of doors.. of engraved / laser cut ply.

The door assemblies consist of two panels and a left and right hand frame... at least..they are supposed to !

However in my kit, I had no frame or panel with the small personal door engraved.

Another email to the manufacturer / designer did bring swift replacements.. but another 'dent' in the quality control department methinks !

In fairness, they arrived within a couple of days.. now I could set to work.

Given that I had now adjusted the original openings, these doors will not fit either aperture..

No worries.. this is is sort of modelling I enjoy... the challenge taxes the mind and helps raise the skill level.

Once measured, I decided the panel with the small personal door single door was too nice to hack about, so this remained as is. The left hand panel was sliced away to suit the remaining aperture / opening.

The support door frame had to be recut to suit the new reduced width door panel.

The new door panels were tested in situ...

Then inspected !

I wanted these doors to be 'poseable' and working , so they were temporarily taped into position to work out what hinges would be required.

Overview of the lokshed and proposed track feeds

Eventually, I sourced some suitable working hinges from a model boat supplier...

Yes, I am quite pleased with these now, especially as they can now be posed, open or closed..

Effectively this now becomes a staff /goods entrance with acccess for the fork lift.

Clearly, due the daft track spacing of the original, the loco/ track entrance is now much wider.. so none of the doors would now fit..

Again, no worries... this will be a corrugated roller shutter door .. upgrade ;o)

Again, these 'new' doors and openings, go some way into 'updating' the old UK loco shed into something more modern, and of course in My Lenz O Gauge Layout.. European.

A little light relief

despite all the major and minor issues I have had with this Timber Tracks Two Road Engine Shed,

I am now quite pleased with the way its shaping up !

Decision Time & a Eureka Moment

Well, even though the first track / door aperture was widened, this still left me with an issue on the second road.. the track spacing cannot be altered... because of the inspection pits..

Remember, these are precut into the floor .. hmm... more thought needed...

Even my Preiser enginer pondered the conundrum !

EUREKA MOMENT !

Aha !

Many thanks to my modelling friend and guru Rich, who planted a seed of an idea in my mind.
Why have 2 roads / tracks in my lokshed anyway ?
( Ignoring the fact its 'supposed' to be a 2 road engine shed )

Hmm.... this ignited a spark.. then more thought and a variation on my original plan was hatched..

Rich.. he was right !

Single Road .. KISS.. ( Keep it Simple Stupid). and so we were once more enthused..

The mini drill saw set was burst into action yet again.. and the central support beam sliced away .
Single Road was the way forward... this removes my annoyance and frustration over the silly track spacing and door aperture / openings..

This decision, would also allow me much more detailing potential with the interior ..

So there we are... still darned disappointed.. but now turning to optimism.

Some new 'steelwork' H girders were installed horizontally and vertically at the door openings.

Above..
shows how much more internal detailing 'space' there will be, with my single road / track design.

In my view, to make this Timber Tracks Two Road Engine Shed into something sensible, as regards internal space and wider door openings, would require a redesign of the floor, roof components and the gable ends. I would say an additional width of 50 - 75 cm would make this an absolutlely fantastic kit..

Alas, I think this would be unlikely... but buyer beware.. if you are thinking of having any reasonable maintenance facility within this two road loco shed kit.

Again, I will add, there are aspects of this kit that are so well designed and executed.. it is really impressive, yet others which sadly fail to meet my expectations.

Overall, I am confident I can now make something very special out of this Timber Tracks Two Road Engine Shed. but it has been hard work !

Still disappointed, Decisions and Drastic Action !

After serveral weeks, I revisited my Timber Tracks Two Road Loco Shed on my Lenz O Gauge Layout Alter Lokschuppen.. Alas.. just as my Preiser figure shows.. it really didn't look any better even with a fresh pair of eyes !

The track spacing 'out on the permanent way' may well be prototypical , to be honest , I couldn't even bothered to measure it, such is my on going disappointment.

There is no escaping, the measurements of the door openings / apertures and the track spacing within the loco shed, are an utter disaster to my plans.

The above image, really does show how 'tight' that gap really is.. as do the following images !

I just cannot accept this is prototypical !

A decision had to be made... either scrap the entire project..?

Re- think the problem through and try a solution ?

DRASTIC ACTION !

Enter the wooden saw set for my Mini Drill..

Measured up an additional scale 2 foot / 60 cm..

Masked off the MDF...

Now that's more like it !...

Frustration sets in - Big Time !

Despite the niggles I have experienced with building this Timber Tracks Two Road Engine Shed kit, I have enjoyed the experience.UNTIL THIS POINT !

I am sorry, Mr Timber Tracks... but the following illustrates my view that your measurements are VERY VERY WRONG !

Now, bear in mind I model LENZ German O Gauge.. which is 1/45 scale...
The UK O Gauge is 1/43 scale,

Remember, with scaling, the smaller the scale number the LARGER the model in proportion to the full size.

1/43 ( this kit ) is close enough to my scale ( 1/ 45) to get away with most things... however the following images do show that something is VERY WRONG with the dimensions of this kit !

Bear in mind that the inspection pits pre-cut into the loco shed floor are effectively 'datum/ reference points' . The track is laid centrally over these pits.. and then through the doorway apertures.

One cannot make any mistake or get anything offset..

I do not believe that this would be represesented in any loco shed anywhere in the world, past , present or future.. IT IS JUST PLAIN WRONG in my view !

My thoughts have been confirmed, when I showed this to a friend who really is an expert modeller, he concurred . He added that one would expect the 'gap' to allow a man to walk through alongside any loco..( clearly not with this one !)

Bearing in mind, I am modelling a SMALLER scale
(1/45) than what this is designed for,
(1/43) with the track centrally aligned over the pits..

My loco's have around a scale 3 inches.. yes,, 75mm or LESS between the loco and the door aperture !

THIS IS FAR TOO CLOSE !

Using my 7mm scale rule ,the total original opening measures under 22 feet, given that there is a central support beam, and my locos average width is 10 1/2 feet.. you can see how I arrive at the scale 3" either side of the rolling stock !

Wooden doors are supplied within the kit for these openings, however, I really would like to see how locos can get through these apertures with doors and hinges on too !

Yes, they are internally hung doors too, cos they aren't wide enough to be externally fitted!

As you can see from the above, the spacing between tracks is also very tight, leaving no room whatsoever for any 'scale' man to work in any capacity..

My little 1/43 scale Preiser worker would only fit between the two items of stock standing side-ways !

IF you want simply a two road storage shed for locos, fine..

If you intended to model any sort of maintenance facility within.. then forget it , this is NOT what you want !

TRUST ME !

I have to be honest, and say at this point, I almost abandoned this entire project.

This was a huge disappointment and set back for me..

and for many weeks.. I walked away from this layout..

Gable Ends & veneers

The Gable Ends of the Lokshed in Alter Lokschuppen, My Lenz O Gauge Layout differ at either end.

The'business' end having two openings for track and the rear simply a doorway and some nice brickwork, together with a small annexe in the form of an office.

Again constructed of laser cut MDF in a layered, laminated style then cladded with detailed brickwork on a ply veneer with the addition of brickwork courses (as used on the side wall detailing).

Worth mentioning in particular, are the vents above the track door openings, which have been amazingly cut with precision by laser.

Sadly, I found the next part of the build a tad frustrating , clearly a lack of precision with the laser cutting here chaps !

Once the 'office' gable end had been laminated and the recesses built up with detailing brick work, the final laminate of ply veneer is to be added.. Hmm.. 'Houston..we have a problem.....'

Even with the veneer accurately placed at the apex and over the 3 recesses on this wall, you can see below the measurements are a good 3- 5mm out when observing the circular vent !

This is sloppy, in my view.. the accuracy of the laser cutting needs looking at Timber Tracks !

The result is clear to see.. the veneer circular orifice is no longer in line with the circular vent on that rear wall and is clearly innacurate !

I had little choice but to continue with the build .
DO make sure you adequately press the veneer to the mdf and weiight it down !

Above, you can see the problem with the innacuracy around the circular vent.

Once this is done, the small annexe / office building is constructed, using the same mdf & veneer cladding technique.

Again, in my pursuit to 'de- Anglicise' the kit, I changed the supplied sash windows and the roofing tiles/ shingles to something more 'European'.

I think the changes have been quite successful.

I also found the veneer cutting measurement sawry around the window openings at this end.
The veneer was offset by around 4mm to one side of the windows, totally innaccurate !

Fortunately I replaced the windows, but if using the original sash windows, I think you would have been asking the manufacturer for a replacement veneer !

Again, I say its these issues, that result in this kit being rated as a good kit rather than a great kit.

Quality control needs improving in certain areas, particularly with the ply veneers , along with the instructions of course.

However, I will again repeat, it will actually look fab when its completed.. but ( in my personal view) these issues should have been sorted before release.

Paint - the first coat

Time for the first lick of paint on the new Alter Lokschuppen Lokshed in my Lenz O Gauge Layout.

If I were to ever build another of these, I'd recommend spraying the walls BEFORE assembly !

As I found out, even with the front wall removeable, space is still restricted, so much so I couldn't even get my airbrush inside.

Eventually, the only method I could use was to use some aerosol spray, in this case a white acrylic prmer, sprayed in light coats on to the internal walls.

It's always nice to see the detailing come to life on any model with a little paint application, my Alter Lokschuppen lokshed is no different. It took me a few coats to get an overall even layer, and then it was left to dry..The laser cut brickwork effect suddenly comes to life.

Another hindsight here too.. I wish I had sprayed a darker colour before the white, I could have then scraped off some white to give a peeling / worn paint effect, hey ho.

The roof trusses were also sprayed, this meant a lot of masking up !
Again, in hindsight, I would paint these before fixing in situ.

The trusses are also nicely laser cut and substantial mdf, they are load bearing for the roof structure so they need to be quite strong, rather than filigree.

A view through the open / removeable side

With the roof parts fitted, its starting to look more European than UK..

When the white was fully dried, the lower section was partially sprayed with another aptly named aerosol 'dirty black' which is more of a dark, dirty grey in reality. You can also see some internal comstruction work taking place.

De- Anglicising the roof

This Timber Tracks Engine Shed, being based on a UK Churchward design is typically of course, English.

My next task was to dis-robe and de Anglicise the look of the shed into a more European style affair.

Despite many of my criticisms, this really is a cleverly designed kit, some elements more so than others.

The laser cutting in most of the parts is excellent, in others much less so.. and I shall highlight those as I progress.

You will need to do a dry run / test of the ply roofing sheets, and chamfer the ridge board ( which is now seated correctly isn't it ?) Ensuring it fits as flat as is possible against the roof trusses and the ridge board.

The skylights are superbly laser cut parts which friction fit perfectly into their respective orifices.

This is were I deviate once again from the instructions.
Looking at various German prototypes the roof vents visually were very different from that supplied with this kit. They were much smaller for a start.

Similarly the chimney / smoke vents in the kit are naturally of a UK type..
A few trials were attempted to get something a little 'European' and as is often the case, simplicity reigns !

A combination of large plastic tubular section, some dome head bolts and washers.. and voila....
Some very European looking smoke vent stacks !

In situ, with the removeable front viewing wall , skylights vents and smoke stacks.. have already made this UK kit instantly 'European'... well, I think so !

Alter Lokschuppen - Lokshed Roof build

My personal gripe :

I had some difficulty understanding some of the terminology used to describe the parts with this kit.

ie:

How am I supposed to know what a foundation ring is ?

To which part does this refer ?

Matters were not helped with the lack of parts list / identification or 'exploded' diagrams, a feature with every other kit I have ever built, in any genre of modelling.

However, the biggest single issue has to be that the instructions are based upon the original prototype model build, which varied considerably from the actual production kit.

ie:

"Now glue the 24 brick piers in place "

ermm..

I actually had 18 in the kit, and was then enlightened by the manufacturer I only use 16 anyway !

For some bizarre reason, the builder is expected to have known this ?

Really ,this is a limited edition kit of only 40 units, not mass production of 1,000's !

I ask, how difficult would it be to have been to add an addendum sheet to clarify the issues ?

Overall, this kit will be and do everything I ask of it, but its not been made easy by the above omissions.

There are other significant issues that become apparent as the build progresses.

Self inflicted adaptations due to my kit bashing, I accept, but there are some fundamental problems ahead for the unwary. I shall endeavour to illustrate these as the build progresses.

Oh yes, and the foundation ring ?

Its the rectangular section that sits on top of the walls supporting the roof trusses..of course you knew that, didn't you ?

At this point, is where I expected issues, because I am now deviating from the instructions. I have chosen to adapt this kit to allow the front viewing wall to be removed. My wish is to have this removable to allow the viewer to delve inside the lokshed with unobstructed viewing (as inspired by Worcester Road layout).

The way this kits construction is designed actually allows me to figure out a way to do this.

Oh yes, and if you are struggling with the 7 intermediate trusses as stated on page 2 of the instructions, there are actually 8.. but again.. you should have known this ?

You will also note the 'Ridge board' is actually an offcut of brick embossed mdf..

and that the precut slots in the end trusses are actually not deep enough.. you will need to cut and notch the ridge board to fit. (again.. not detailed in the instructions).

Spacers are then added to the ridge board, between each truss to ensure stability.

Thus far, the kit has been a bit more of a 'challenge' than I anticipated, principally due to poor instructions, lack of parts identification etc as stated above.

This is a disappointment, and makes what could be a great kit merely a good kit.

Self induced adaptations and issues that follow I accept as a consequence, but there are fundamental failings within this kit that cannot be excused.

That said, I am much further into the build now and I am confident it will end up being a stunner.. but it has been hard work.

At least now, if you are one of the other 39 buyers of this kit, ( remember this is a Limited Edition of 40 kits) you will at least avoid some of the issues and frustrations I have had with this build... and they are not over yet !

Parts & Assembly begin

Many of the parts are lasercut MDF, the loco / lokshed walls have fully detailed brickwork on the inside and the outside walls .This was one of the main attractions of this kit for me.The method of construction is actually quite clever, and for the most part, fits quite accurately together.

To give depth to the walls and window openings the external walls are layered :

Once the outer and inner walls are layered together using the aliphatic resin glue, the individual window brickwork is added to give the 3D layered effect. These are small strips of ply veneers of varying depths.This takes a good length of time to complete, but is actually very therapeutic

Top marks to Timber Tracks for this design and method of build, it really is very clever !

The Gable ends and internal floor are also MDF and nicely detailed.

Again using the layer technique, additional details are added to the internal walls and pillars as desired.

Of course, as modellers... we cannot resist the temptation to 'test fit' ... looks cool eh ?

The Search for the Lokshed - Engine Shed

Modellers will have noticed how incredibly expensive some scratch built parts are becoming, particularly plastic sheets /extrusions and modelling ply / timber. I had a plan for a building in my mind, but when I worked out the costs of the materials it would seem I'd need a bank loan !

Very little of the previous Alter Lokschuppen lokshed re-incarnations survived so clearly couldn't be recycled.. I searched the www, for inspiration or a suitable kit. I looked at resin kits, these looked stunning, very expensive but totally lacked any interior detail in my view. Apart from which, the reluctance of the suppliers to accept any payment other than IBAN made it very expensive..

I looked at plastic kits.. these just didn't have the presence I wanted and did look flimsy..
No, I wanted something that I could 'kitbash' into something I'd like. modellers licence would rule !

After searching for many months, I found the following from C & L Finescale.
Ok , its of UK origin, and I model German prototypes.. so the question was could I somehow 'kit bash' and 'de-Anglicise' a UK kit into something akin to European ?

Hmm.. more investigation was needed...

Getting anything decent in kit form for 'reasonable' money was impossible, however I settled on this, on the basis it gave me a good base on which to kit bash..

My main requirement was to allow my stock to be viewed INSIDE the lokshed, with the option of replacing the wall / roof when desired.. OPTIONS... I do like options...

The kit is manufactured in various materials, principally laser cut and detailed, mdf,ply and ply veneer, with detailed parts in white metal and plastic.

I have to admit, the purchase of this kit was a risk, not fully knowing how it was constructed I wondered if I could in fact achieve my goal.. or whether it would soon be on ebay and sold at a loss !

Luckily, the modeller in me took control, and the building began !

I experienced many issues when building this kit,the instructions are incredibly 'presumptious' of the builders ability & knowledge, and matters are not helped when they refer to the original prototype kit and NOT the modified production kit you purchase !

That said, many of the issues were overcome to my satisfaction, some however are just plain 'silly' in my view and should not have occured in a kit of this quality or price.

At times, I really tested the patience of the designer / manufacturer with my apparantly inane questions, but in fairness they did come through with the answers and spare / missing parts that I needed.

Idea's & Inspiration

So what's the plan ?

I have to say these days, little really 'inspires me' with my railway modelling,but there is an exception... however it is Gauge 1 . For several years there has been a superb model railway layout , here in the UK called 'Worcester Road' built by Steve Harrod.

This is a unique layout, in that it models the interior of a loco shed.. It's displayed at eye level and allows the viewer a 'letter box ' viewpoint into the inside of the locoshed.

Truth be told, I have had this bookmarked within my favourites for years, and even though its of UK prototypes, I have much admiration for the modelling skills the builder has for this superb model.

So the seed has been set.. this is the quality build I am aiming for..

Still keeping with the modern day preservation scene, a German Lokshed with Lenz O Gauge EraIII stock.

Highly detailed lokshed, with a removeable wall and roof to allowing one to 'zoom' into views within of stock and interior .

The wall and roof will be repleaceable, to allow the lokshed to be part of a bigger scene on the layout, when one 'zooms out'.

Much simpler track plan, with more exterior detailing, recycle certain elements of previous Alter Lokschuppen layouts.

KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid )

Following a 'reality check' in my life and the near miss of losing employment, earlier last year, led me to re-evaluate priorities, including my hobby.

It dawned on me, that if I were to lose my job, the knock on effect would also be to lose the house in which we live, and of course, the workshop /shed where Alter Lokschuppen was housed too.

Realistically, the layout had become a fixed part of my outbuilding, and essentially an 'immoveable object' !

Regular followers, will have seen how My Lenz O Gauge Layout 'Alter Lokschuppen' had grown with continual expansion, with little thought on my part for any eventual 'move'.
Hence the prospect of losing everything made me realise I had to start again, but this time, build a layout with the prospect of it being transported ( possibly, sometime).

At the same time, I just knew I had to follow a similar ' Alter Lokschuppen / preservation theme' to allow me to keep my Lenz O Gauge stock, modern vehicles and people, but build it better than ever..

Thoughts:

1. I wondered why I spent so much money on my locos and rolling stock and then hide them away behind the walls of a lokshed ?

2. Did I really need all these points and the complication ?

3.Must make my boards modular and easier to move.

4.Can I improve on what I had done with previous versions of My Lenz O Gauge Layout 'Alter Lokschuppen ?

5. KISS - as the saying goes .. Keep It Simple Stupid....

6. This really IS.. my final Alter Lokschuppen layout !

So after some thought, I decided Alter Lokschuppen, My Lenz O Gauge Layout will be -reborn, and I will aim to give it the most detail I could and hopefully the pinnacle of my modelling experience to date.

I intend this new layout to be a more 'paced' hobby, rather than the 'obsessive', with so many other demands on my time, this has to be so.

This blog / diary will also be paced, I have no desire to continually update every thing I do with my new layout.
Again, demands on my time,means I 'd rather be modelling than blogging.

This is the background to the latest 're-incarnation' of Alter Lokschuppen, My Lenz O Gauge Layout, I hope you continue to find something of interest within the blog.

Due to changing circumstances, Alter Lokshuppen as you see it has now reached the end of the line for me.

I have enjoyed the experience and learned much along the way, particularly pushing my own limits and boundaries of my skill levels. These skills will be put to use in another smaller more managable project, so various aspects/ material / models may 'live again'.

If you are lucky, you may even see the odd item pop up on that famous auction site!

Just a small diversion from Alter Lokschuppen:

To indulge a whim I have, to model an era III setting for one of my favourite loco's.

Pride of place will be the diminutive Kof II from Lenz, a fantastic little model and most definately one of my all time favourites !

Originally ( as blogged) I had intended the new shelf layout to feature a small Kof lokshed, this was ok, until I had fitted the backscene.I then had a change of heart / inspiration !

The main feature is now a small coal merchant and adjacent builders yard.
With loads of modelling potential , I feel this now gives the little layout some 'purpose'.

It's still only a small layout, very simply a private siding to the coal merchant / builders yard.
The rest of the layout will be used as a scenic setting to photograph and pose other stock from Alter Lokschuppen, My Lenz O Gauge Layout.

Of course, the main motive power will be the wondeful Lenz O Gauge / Spur 0 Kof II .

A bit of fun ...

Sometimes, I get to sit alongside Alter Lokschuppen, My Lenz O Gauge layout and ponder the next 'project' with the layout. Other times, I simply gaze ( and nod off !) at the layout and try and decide what to do, or I shuffle some stock around 'playing trains'.

As dusk fell, I fumbled through my stock of preiser O Gauge people and set about a brief cameo scene or two, just for fun, and for the camera.. and hey.. it IS ( as the saying goes...) MY TRAINSET !

There appears to be a small 'family'outing to Alter Loskschuppen this evening, and evidently arrived by minibus.

Even Grandma seems to be a photography enthusuiast.. ( note she is also wearing a bobble hat.. must be getting chilly ?).

Ahh... two of the children, have already made it to the V45 plinthed loco and are posing for the relatives.

Oh dear... big sister is getting carried away in 'wannabe a model pose with her boyfriend ;o)

The boyfriend now gets the younger sister to strike a pose with her big sister and the V45 too.

Here again, while the Preiser figures are fabulous models, these will also need some modellers attention to improve them.

On many individuals there is a moulded 'seam' that needs removing, this will mean some repainting too. They are all far too 'glossy' so they will also need matt varnishing treatment, but before that, some details will need adding.

Just a little bit of fun, hey.... this is therapy you know !

Road Legal

Road vehicles, form a large part of my hobby enjoyment, and most of my 1/43 scale vehicles needed new registration / licence plates.Some of the models are supplied with plates, however most are not. Hence, this little project took several hours to complete, but I am pleased they are now 'road legal' ;o) Just a few examples to illustrate the 'difference'. Below is a VW Golf GTi, as supplied with only its GTi plate. Adding a registration plate, immediately improves the vehicles appearance. Similarly, below is a Volvo Estate XC70, a fabulous dealership model, but again just supplied with its XC70 plate.

A little time and effort, makes all the difference.

After several hours, the fleet of vehicles 'in progress'.

Here they are, 'on scene'.. well worth the effort methinks..

One of the few vehicles that came 'ready licenced' was this lovely Minichamps Vw transporter.

At some stage, each and every vehicle wil receive attention of some sort including weathering and detailing.

Flower Power

Today, I had a 'hmm ... what shall I do today ?' thought. Inspiration followed, prompted by early Spring time sunshine and the birdsong, flowers.... out came the Busch flower kits purchased last year. I know these are quoted as 'HO' scale, but in my view they are equally suited to O Gauge . Have to say you need patience to assemble these, the parts are so titchy & small, and 'ping' anywhere given the opportunity !

Once I had assembled enough 'stock', the target are in focus is the newly grassed area below the Alter Lokschuppen sign.

A flower bed excavation was started, using a sharp scalpel the turf was removed.

Various positions of the plants were tried, then some solvent free adhesive added to the base.

Once in position, some very fine blended foam scatter material was added, this effectively hides the plastic bases of each plant.

A small addition, but a very pleasant detailed item, that took a few hours 'therapy' modelling !

Finally, a blast /spray of matt varnish and it reduces the shiny plastic look of the plant & flowers.

One of the workers inspects the newly planted border !

De cluttering continued.

Following on from an earlier post, the 'de-cluttering' of Alter Lokschuppen continues. This time, the smaller car park section and greenery was the target 'in scope'. I removed the trees and commenced stripping the area back to the baseboard.

The area concerned has been re-worked. New lawn /grassed area added, together with a new fence .On this occasion, the green area is mini -natur 'Silflor' donated by a good friend and 'sponsor' of Alter Lokschuppen.

This is what I call 'posh grass' as it costs around 4x the price of 'normal' grass mat, but it really does make the difference !

The area now opens up more of the layout to the viewer (& the camera ) and I am quite pleased with this, I feel its a big improvement.

Very effectively, this combined with the previous de-clutter of the service yard area gives the layout a much more 'open' feel.

The 'Alter Lokschuppen' sign, is still ( yes still !) the original 'temporary' sign.

A set of working / moveable gates have also been added.

There's still more work to be undertaken in this area, detailing and painting etc...

All of the vehicles require number plates and also weathering and detailing to various degrees.

Review, Evolution - an on going process

Following a recent visit from a dear friend, who had his frst 'Continental Experience' with Alter Lokschuppen, I viewed the 'action' from a different perspective. This experience, allowed me to make a few small, but radical decisions regarding certain aspects of My Lenz O Gauge Layout. The area in focus : the service yard area canopy, hmm, this had to go... so demolition commenced... once the decision had been 'slept on' . Ah.. instant gratification... the area concerned immediately opened up the view, with the removal of the vertical structure.

Some stock placed into this siding, again confirms it was the right decision.

An additional hard standing / concrete area was made from plasticard and scribed into concrete sections.

Even the driver of the works Transit van was shocked at the speed of the demolition and clean up process ;o)

It is a known fact that a model railway is 'never finished' , My Lenz O Gauge layout is no different. However, none of these 'major' decisions are made on a whim , the consequences are thought through prior to wielding the 'axe' and starting demolition.

A bit of rough (undergrowth that is)

A few hours 'therapy' today saw me paying a little attention to the 'green stuff' near the Halte / station area of my preserved railway.

I felt the grassed area by the halte was too 'cultivated' and needed a 'bit of rough'.
As per my usual landscaping method, the original Heki grass mat is used as the prmary 'base layer'.

Below is one of the earlier posts, which cleary shows the 'target area'.

Using various blends of material and colours of scenic items, the depth and texture of the area is built up as desired.

The addition of some 'mini- natur' small wild flowers were also added to give a little colour variety.

Similarly, the addition of a few Noch Laser cut ferns , were placed on scene.

Not a great deal of work, however its made a huge difference to just this little scenic area.

Still more texture and depth will be added at a later time.

Go Figure ! It's not just about model trains you know.

Well, the title says it all really ;o)

For me anyway, model railways and particularly Alter Lokschuppen, My Lenz O Gauge /Spur 0 Layout, really isn't 'simply trains'. There can be ( if you desire, that is) so many different aspects to a model railway to enjoy.

Regular followers of this blog, will know how I enjoy collecting and displaying my O gauge road vehicles too, and yet another enjoyable part of the hobby is figures.

Placing figures and vehicles around the layout gives me the opportunity to create small 'cameo /diorama' scenes, which I enjoy photographing too.

Similarly the use of layout lighting, daylight and my workshop lighting can change the 'view' quite effectively.

As previously stated in my earlier posts, there is around 2 years or so 'actual modelling' left in Alter Lokschuppen.

Figures for example will always require additional work , either in detailing, painting varnishing or a visit to 'the operating table' where some of their 'limbs' will be 'adjusted ;o)
Vehicles are yet another vast project, with weathering, detailing, varnishing and of course adding registration plates and passengers / drivers too..

What follows is just 30 mins 'play' , adding people, setting up poses and taking a few pics.. you get the idea ?

This aspect will improve greatly when the modelling of Alter Lokschuppen and all of its 'extras' near completion. For now.. I am thoroughly enjoying what I am doing...

' Boys with their toys ?' Who cares.. as long as I am enjoying it :o)

Addiction ! Into the night with the Br64

This Lenz O Gauge Spur 0 Br64 is totally fantastic ! When she is moving or simply static the beast is a wonderful example of fine model engineering.

Again, I returned to Alter Lokschuppen for some 'night time' therapy / running.

I hope you enjoy the images as much as I am enjoying the model !

Like the rest of the Alter Lokschuppen, the lokshed area is not yet completed, the internals and externals need more work , with many details and weathering effects yet to be decided upon and added.

Have to say though, I am truly delighted with this and it's going to get even better !

Lenz BR64 revisits Alter Lokschuppen,

Ahh, Spring is in the air !

March 18th 2011, and the Br64 #295 re-visits Alter Lokschuppen my Lenz O gauge Layout.

Observant blog followers will notice I haven't yet added the small detail parts to this loco yet, this can wait until I get to work on the rolling stock.

For the moment, I am enjoying the Br64 as it came out of the box ! The variation from my diesels appearance & sounds are simply fantastic !

There is still a very long way to go with Alter Lokschuppen, so much detailing and weathering yet to come... I am in no rush, and I will continue at my own pace.

Sometimes.. it's just nice to 'play trains' .. Boys n their toys !

Alter Lokschuppen Revisited - A Night Time Session

At last, we are now almost leaving Winter here in the UK and heading for Spring ;o).

Whilst there has been little in the way of updates on the Alter Lokschuppen blog /web pages, I have been undertaking other major projects to future proof my hobby / leisure time !

Tonight, I just had an urge, to get the camera out and get snapping with an hours night time running session, which I thoroughly enjoyed. What follows are some 'ad hoc' impulse photography poses from the session.

In no particular order, just a random selection of images showing my Lenz O Gauge / Spur 0 layout under it's night time illumination.

Alter Lokschuppen is so very far from being completed, I estimate at least another 18 - 24 months worth of modelling , detailing and weathering yet to be done.

Lenz Spur 0 / O Gauge BR 64 Bubikopf 1st Impressions

Well, at long last after several years in development & production the Lenz DB BR64 'Bubikopf' Steam tank locomotive is released !

It seems like an eternity waiting for its arrival, but at least gave me time to save up for it !

**Due to demand being greater than supply, I am one of the fortunate few to have received one of these in the UK. **

First Impressions :
The outer box is the customary Lenz Spur 0 artwork, very sturdy and securely packed.
Seems so heavy too, thats a real surprise !

The now customary, polystyrene inserts protect the loco in transit and house the BR 64 documentation ( in German text format ).

For English speaking modellers, please refer to my previous posting courtesy of Daniel von Kanel from Canada.

Once inside, the loco is buried deep within moulded polystyrene and held in place with some extremely tight packing wedges.

**Note : these wedges are not removeable, but securely hold the loco unit in place. **

Simply take a firm grip on the loco water tanks and lift out gently.

Be prepared for the weight, it's really heavy !

Also within the package there are 2 small bags of detailing parts for the modeller to add. (these include the ladders for the rear coal bunker and various parts for the tank area's ) Note: these are quite delicate parts, so care is needed.

Personally I shall use tweezers and Bostik 'Solvent Free' adhesive,this glue will avoid damage to either the parts or the model.

As already commented in German Forums, there are no driver engineer or fireman figures supplied, this is no big deal for me, and anyway, Preiser do make a nice set of figures to suit.

Unwrapped.. all I can say is... WOW !! Fantastic !

Every other superlative I can think of, whizzes through my mind !

What an absolute beauty Herr Lenz has brought us !

This Lenz Br 64 O Gauge/ Spur 0 model just oozes quality, it looks fantastic, and is such incredible value for money !

Below is the overview, 'straight out of the box' as the saying goes..

So now we shall take a closer look at the Lenz BR 64, are you drooling yet ? ;o)

This is truly beautiful, fabulous details, now I am no 'steam expert' but this is indeed a mighty fine locomotive, and already I can say probably one of the best RTR ( ready to run) locomotives you could buy.

Without a doubt, the 'jewel in the crown' of my fleet on Alter Lokschuppen, My Lenz O Gauge / Spur 0 Layout !

The valve gear / mechanism is lovely, no horrible big screw heads or hexagon screws visible.

As stated earlier, I was pleasantly suprised to find the major construction material of this loco is metal and you can feel this in it's weight.

The external fittings and pipework are some of the best I have ever seen. These are not simply moulded into the boiler section, but appear to be separately applied.

If they aren't then they do give that appearance ! Fantastic !

So far, I have to say, the BR 64 has exceeded all my expectations on quality and appearance, quite simply superb. I couldn't wait to seeing and hearing her in action !

I make no apology for singing this loco's praises, the images surely speak for themselves ?

Am I excited ? You bet I am !

The glazing, cab interior and markings are similarly superb ! No doubt the addition of crew members and some very light weathering will enhance this beauty, even further.

Clearly, I just had to try her out on Alter Lokschuppen !

Wow..... now on the tracks and even better with some scenery in place, quite simply Stunning !

What can I say, the sounds are superb, steam hiss, release valves, horn / whistle is brilliant !

A bell, fireman shovelling coal, sound of the fire door opening and closing, couplers being unscrewed and released.. and the 'chuff'.. well .. absolutely fantastic !

Naturally synchronised with speed.. the inital chuff is more of a 'phoar' roar as she starts to move.. Incredibly realistic in my view and so very different from the diesels already at home on Alter Lokschuppen, My Lenz O Gauge / Spur 0 Layout.

As my layout is relatively small, I can't really put the BR64 through its paces, but am delighted that even on idle or tootling about my 'preservation scene' it sounds awesome !

As Alter Lokschuppen is still an 'in build' project, I haven't even begun to change any programming /settings of any of my loco's.. all in good time.

For now, I shall enjoy the change of mood with my Bubikopf Br 64 ;o)

As the latest 'aquisition' arrived ,the staff at Alter Lokschuppen seem as excited as I am !

Even the ' modelling press' and TV company have now arrived and find the arrival 'news worthy' ;o)

Critique ?

It's a shame that the demand totally outstripped supply of the original production, there must be many disappointed modellers, who had theirs on order for such a long time. Trust me ! It really will be worth the wait !

Some German forums, have made a huge fuss about the lack of figures, simply because all previous Lenz O Gauge / Spur 0 loco's had them, for me this is a non event, the Loco has to be the main feature !

My one and only niggle, would perhaps be the documentation, and only because I understand little German. Many thanks to a fellow O Gauge / Spur 0 enthusiast Daniel von Kanel from Canada, who is equally delighted with his Lenz Br 64, you can find these detailed in the previous posting.

Fortunately the dcc controls tend to follow the rest of the models in the range so its only getting used to them.

*Bernd, may I suggest that you put a English pdf version of each loco on your website please ?*

I look forward to getting much enjoyment with this new addition to my loco fleet .

The Lenz O Gauge / Spur 0 'Bubikopf' BR64, this is most definately going to set the standards for RTR O Gauge / Spur 0 steam locomotives for we 'ordinary modellers'.

You no longer have to be 'mega rich' or elitist to own such fine quality models.

As an ordinary modeller, you will still need to save up for these models, but boy are the worth it !

In my opinion, the BR64 IS the finest model locomotive from the Lenz stable to date.

The model is simply fantastic in value for money, detail, appearance , finish and in use.. Brilliant !

Dear Model Railroaders,
Your model of the BR64 has been thoroughly tested before delivery, paying special attention to the overall look, completeness of detail and functionality of the model. Should you find a fault with the model, either functional or otherwise, please return the model to your dealer.

How to unpack the model

Since there are many delicate, separately attached detail parts on the model, please handle only the outside water tanks when removing it from the box to prevent damage. This way the model can be lifted out of its package without any problems.

In order to prevent any damage to the delicate detail parts, the front steps on the locomotive buffer beam and the front of the side water tanks, as well as the lids for the tanks and the tender ladders have not been factory mounted, but must be added by the modeller. Please be advised that the design of the model’s box does not allow it to be replaced in the package once the parts have been attached.

The prototype

After the consolidation of most of the independent state railway into the Deutsche Reichsbahn in 1925, the plan was to standardize the many different types of locomotives. Then, step by step, the new standard types of locomotives, the so called Einheitsbauarten, would replace the older types. One of the first series of locomotives in this replacement plan was the BR (Baureihe) 64. Between 1928 and 1940 at total of 520 of these units nicknamed Bubikopf, where built by most of the locomotive works in Germany.

Because of the excellent running qualities and the performance of the engine which was capable of a top speed of 90 km/h forwards or backwards, the 1’C’1 engine was a favourite to be used in front of passenger trains. But it was equally at home on the front of push/pull or on freight trains. The units could be found all over Germany until retired from service in 1974 in many sheds (BW).

The model

The scale of the model is 1:45. The chassis, boiler and side tanks are made from metal. The cab is made from plastic. Many of the fine detail parts of the model have been added separately.

Special features:
A high performance motor drives the rear axle over a silent belt drive. Automatic coupling feature, alternatively a prototypical screw and hook coupling are included with the model. It features constant lighting including the possibility of changing the lights independent of the driving direction. Among the many special details are sprung buffers, metal side rods and drivers.
Automatic recognition of Lenz-Digital (DCC) signals or operation with conventional DC is possible.

With Lenz-Digital the following features are available:
Pre-programmed automatic load adaptation with especially sensitive slow driving capabilities. Programmable for acceleration and braking speeds. USP, ABC, RailCom, remote uncoupling mode, original sound remote controllable, on off possibility for cab lighting.

Usage:
The model of the BR64 can be used on:
Layouts with digital control using a NMRA approved system (for example Digital Plus by Lenz)
Conventional DC power controlled layouts using direct current with maximal 16 Volts

If you are unsure that your controller/transformer is suitable for use with the model, please contact the dealer or manufacturer of the unit to see if it can be used without causing damage.

The remote uncoupling feature:

The new remote uncoupling feature has been especially developed for the Lenz O scale program. We set the bar high for the functionality of the coupling system in the design phase. It should make buffer to buffer operation possible, but also it should be possible to couple and un-couple on a curve.
The solution we found was the “double hook” coupling.

It is possible to use the coupling system even in curves, down to a radius of 800 millimetres, to couple on to a car and take it out of a curved siding. For this the front part of the hook is used.

In nudging the coupled cars together, the couplings hooks ride up and secure themselves on the coupling beams. This makes a realistic buffer to buffer operation of the train possible.

The coupling on the BR64 model is made to be remote controlled. This feature can only be accessed in DCC digital mode. More detailed instructions on how to use the feature can be found on the next pages

Conventional operation (analog mode)

The high performance motor used in this model combined with the extremely free rolling capacity makes it possible for the engine to start moving when a current of 2 Volts is on the tracks. Since the constant lighting of the locomotive starts at 4 Volts, it is possible that the engine will start to move before the lights come on.

Digital operation (DCC mode)

The factory setting for the decoder chip in the locomotive is set to 64. This address is, according to the DCC standards, re-programmable. Please refer to the instructions for your DCC system on how to change a locomotive address, and follow the recommended steps.
The following functions (F) can be activated in the DCC operations mode:
F0: Front lights
When activated, the white top light is on during forward operation
F1: Rear lights
When activated, the rear top light is on during reverse operation.
These two functions allow, depending on what side the locomotive has coupled on to some cars, to prototypically correctly turn the lights off on the side of the locomotive that faces the cars. Are both functions 0 and 1 activated the lights change automatically, according to the direction the locomotive travels.
F2 Coupling
How to use this feature:
The train is driven to the where the un-coupling is to take place. Now the direction of the locomotive decoder is set so that it can move away from the train. Now the F2 button activates the uncoupling feature, by lifting the locomotive and wagon hooks. The engine then creeps about 20 millimetres away from the couplings so that the lifting piece is lowered again.

Please note:
Do not forget to turn off the F2 function after using it. It is possible to reuse the feature only after a short waiting period, when the coupling unit has been turned off momentarily.

If you are using a central control unit from Lenz-Digital the LZ110/LZV100 with the LH100 or LH90 cab controller (from version 3 onwards), it is recommended to use the momentary setting for the F2 function. If you are using a Lenz O scale “Set90 Spur 0 Edition” this step is not necessary, since it has been pre-programmed by the factory.
F3 Steam sound
You can hear the prototypical steam sound of a BR64; the sound changes depending on the speed and load on the hook
F4 Whistle
The length of the whistle sound depends on how long the function is activated. We therefore recommend changing the setting to momentary operation.

F5 Shunting light and shunting driving speed
When activating function F5, the slow shunting speed and the shunting lights configuration are turned on. The speed of the shunting driving speed setting is about half or regular operation setting. Therefore it is possible to achieve the smoothest shunting manoeuvres possible. Shunting light settings means that both the front and rear lights are on all the times and remain on independent of the direction the engine moves.
F6 crew cabin light
With this function the lights in the cabin can be turned on and off
F7 Bell
This function operates the bell of the BR64. The sound is on as long as the function is turned on. We recommend putting this function into the momentary operation mode also.
F8 Shunting signal/ Announcement/ Squealing brakes
When the locomotive is standing still, a short whistle blast is heard when activating the function button a short time. If the function button is depressed for a longer time, an announcement is made. Is the function activated during the time the engine moves (starting at throttle setting 11) the sound of squealing brakes can be heard.
F10 Uncoupling sound
When activating the F10 button, the typical uncoupling sound can be heard

Further Function in digital operations mode

USP- Uninterruptable Signal Processing
When operating a model railroad it is always very annoying when a locomotive stalls on a section of track. The world’s first and only solution for this problem is the innovation called USP. It banishes this undesirable problem for ever and sets a new standard in model rail road technology.
The locomotive has an energy storage device build in. From this storage device the locomotive is supplied with sufficient power to continue operation, should there be a momentary loss of power due to a dead frog or dirty piece of track.
RailCom
The BR64 locomotive is equipped with RailCom. This means that the locomotive chip is sending information along the track back to the control cab during operation. This information can then be displayed, for example on a address display LRC120 (Digital plus by Lenz©)
ABC = simple signal halt and slow operating speed
Stopping on a dime in front of signals using the innovative ABC (Automatic Breaking Control) feature. Of course this also works for push-pull units.

With the help of the Digital plus ABC-Modules it is possible for the locomotive decoders to recognize three different signalling aspects: track ahead is clear, stop and proceeds slowly and react to them. Drive thru, stopping (with pre-programmed brake path) brake and slow down to the pre-programmed slow speed setting. If a train approaches the signal from the opposite side, all actions are ignored.
During a halt, all functions still are accessible and the locomotive is able to reverse away from a signal. When using the ABC module a back and forth push/pull train steering is possible.

Constant braking path
Functions like this: when a braking manoeuvre is desired (stopping the engine from any speed down to the 0 setting on the throttle) the engine brakes on a pre-set brake path and distance that is programmed into the decoder. This is not dependent on the operating speed at the time.

Maintenance:
It is not necessary to remove the upper structure of the locomotive for maintenance purposes. Light bulbs do not need to be replaced, since the model is equipped with long lasting maintenance free light diodes (LED’s).

The gears of the locomotive are equipped with a permanent lubrication system and do not require any maintenance. From time to time the wheel bearings of the engine need oiling.
Use only special model railroading oil, available at your model railroad dealer.

Important Notice

This product is not suitable to be use by children under the age of 3, due to the many small parts on the model. If not handled appropriately, there is a danger that injuries could occur due to the many sharp edges and corners! This model is suited for dry rooms only. Any errors or changes due to technological advancements, product updates or production changes remain the right of the manufacturer. Any liability due to improper handling or use, non-observation of these instructions, the use of unsuitable transformers and other electronically appliances, attempted repairs without authorisation, use of force, overheating, dampness, and any other such actions, are excluded. Cutting the Mustard with Mustard Tools ' O Gauge / Spur 0 Test Road '

One accessory, I have always thought would be useful on Alter Lokschuppen, My Lenz O Gauge / Spur 0 layout is a rolling road for testing /setting up my Lenz O Gauge locomotives.

Having googled rolling roads for a while, I eventually settled on a system made here in the UK, my decision based on price and quality as well as the simplicity of the system.

This useful aid to “exercise your loco” (as one little chap was overheard to say at Telford) can be used on or off the track to test a locomotive. The principle it uses is the required number of bearing blocks are located on the track, one bearing block per set of driving wheels. The locomotive to be tested is then placed on the test road in addition to the bearing block there are available, support blocks. These are placed under the locomotive/tender where required. The current from the track is conducted through the bearing blocks to the locomotive wheels and as the blocks are divided with an insulation material the locomotive collects current, just as it would on the track. The quality industrial bearings supplied offer no resistance and the loco can be put through its paces running quite freely on the bearings. If there is a requirement to test the loco away from the track (in a workshop for instance) power can be fed to the bearing blocks with a spade connection or similar to the 2.5mm screw in the bearing block sides. The tender block also has this provision for locos with tender pick up or cross wiring. The "0" Gauge boxed pacific set test road consists of three bearing blocks, one bogie block, pony block and tender block hence a 4 - 6 - 2 + T.

Mustard Tools 'Wheel Shine'.

The Wheel Shine is best used with the Mustard Test Road. The principle is uses is as follows: A Wheel Shine is located on the track and replaces one of the bearing blocks. When the other bearing blocks pick up the current this drives the locomotive wheels round. The Wheel Shine locates below the wheels with the sprung cleaning shoes applying just the right amount of pressure for the cleaning material in the shoes of the Wheel Shine to work. By swapping the Bearing Blocks round all the loco wheels can be cleaned. M&M supply two types of cleaning pads one is Scotch Brite and the other is a special felt, both of these are available at exhibitions as packet refills. The Wheel Shine has a mustard gold anodised finish

On the Workbench

Okay, so what's it like in practice ?

Here we go then,

I purchased the 'Pacific' test road as detailed above, however with only three bearing blocks, I had to purchase an additional beairng block to use with my Lenz V100 loco ( Bo-Bo ) diesel.

Here's a few images of the bearing blocks set up ( on the bench) with my Lenz Loco's as willing participants.

Above, you can see my Kof II sitting upon 2 bearing blocks.

Note : 1 bearing block required for each driving axle. ( The Pacific set only has 3 so an extra block is needed for a bo-bo diesel loco)

Above, the Lenz V100 Bo-Bo ( Bogie diesel) requires a total of 4 bearing blocks as each axle / wheel set is driven.

Ahh.. the V36.. due to it's quirky driving wheel set up can only have bearing blocks fitted under 2 of it's axles.. a bit of a conundrum for Mustard Tools, who are looking at a possible 'fix' for this.

The rolling test road is simplicity in itself, very nicely engineered and finished in a yellow anodised aluminium finish. Each unit simply fits within the O gauge track work , between the rails. The weight of the loco ( even the diminutive Kof II) is sufficient to hold it in place.

Each side of the units are electrically isolated and current is collected from the rail head, just as a loco would from the track.

As above, the units may also be used on the bench, without track. Each unit has a screw on both sides to which a spade end fitted electrical feed can be attached. The modeller does need to remove some of the anodised coating from below the screws for electrical contact.

As a famous meerkat would say... 'simples '.

On the test Track

The images below show the units set up with various Lenz O Gauge locos on a test track.

Each loco 'sits' atop of some high quality bearings, these bearings offer very little resistance, so the loco can even be 'excercised' right up to full power. This is useful to me given the limited 'running length' of Alter Lokschuppen.

The image above shows the lenz Kof II on 1 bearing unit with the second replaced by the 'wheel shine ' unit. As this loco collects current on both axles ( all wheels) the wheel shine unit is simply alternated as required.

I used the supplied felt pads, and you can see how much 'muck / grime / dirt' there was on the Kof's wheels ! As you can see IT WORKS !

On Alter Lokschuppen, My Lenz O Gauge / Spur 0 Layout.

Uses ?

I guess , some will ask ? why do I need / want a rolling test road ?

For me, and my Lenz O Gauge Layout, it offers me a method of setting my cv's , tweaking any of the values I want, without running on the track.

As Lenz locos are fully DCC including sounds, it also offers me the option of setting volumes and various sounds without running out of space.

Testing of all functions is also another use.

The Mustard Test Road also allows me to 'run in' my locos for smoother running and as Alter Lokschuppen is a relatively small layout, I can get my loco's to 'stretch their legs' too!

Finally, using the additional wheel shine unit, I can also give the loco wheels a clean as necessary.

Conclusion

Overall, the quality of the Mustard Test Road is 1st class, allows me to demonstrate / test run / maintain my loco wheel sets it top condition. Compared to other I have seen, it offers good value for money too.

This is a welcome piece of kit for Alter Lokshuppen, My Lenz O Gauge layout and for me it really does 'cut the mustard '. (meaning : to succeed, meet expectation )

012-Express Magazine (Lenz Special)

I had hoped for this to arrive for Christmas, however the madness of the UK postal system meant it arrived just after the New Year.

I am not aware of this magazines availability in the UK, hence it was imported from Germany via the infamous Ebay.

The 012 - Extra Express, is a special publication devoted to O Gauge modelling with specific emphasis on Lenz O Gauge / Spur 0 products and the modular layout 'Lenzhausen -Nullingen" as featured on the Lenz website.

The 012-Express magazine is , naturally, in German text, however the publishers have a web link for us non German speaking modellers with an English Pdf download .

The magazine is a high quality production with high quality gloss paper / printing.
Top class photos of work in progress and completed area's of various layout, I felt it was worth the cost.

New Year Greetings to all fellow Lenz Spur 0 enthusiasts and followers of Alter Lokschuppen, My Lenz O Gauge Layout.

Currently, I am working to improve my workshop & layout environment,with better insulation and storage area. Hence, work on the layout itself is 'paused' for the moment.

There are many new things to come on Alter Lokschuppen, many minor projects,some major, and oodles and oodles of detailing work / modelling to be done.

To date, the layout has had a few twists and turns, but has been 'in the making' for over 4 years now.

I am still as enthused as always, and look forward to every visit I make to my layout.With my modelling, I have now reached the stage where I am in no rush to do anything,I just enjoy every moment.

Coming soon, Alter Lokschuppen will feature several new items I received for Christmas, so watch this space.

My, how this year has flown by !

Alter Lokschuppen, My Lenz O Gauge / Spur 0 Layout continues to take shape and still very much a work in progress with still so much more modelling & detailing yet to be completed.

There are also still a few 'mini projects' backstage, awaiting a start, which all helps keep the interest in the layout .

Alter Lokschuppen will be on holiday for a short time, due to this 'busy' time of year.

From Alter Lokschuppen, I wish everyone a Very Merry Christmas .

At long last, I think all my lighting circuits are now in place.

As is usual for me, I shall fully test these , before securing them permanently into position.
Here are the results of a photo shoot today, clearly showing how lighting can totally change a layout and its buildings.

All through Alter Lockshuppen My lenz O Gauge / Spur 0 layout, I have endeavoured to build in as many ' options' as I can, to give me longevity of enjoyment. The lighting is no different, with multiple 'looms' independantly switched, I now have many options for my photo sessions.

Due to the necessity of removing the lokshed building from time to time, ( for track maintenance and adding / changing detailing), I have added a small connector to the main feed for this building.

There is still some 'light leakage' between the building walls and ground sections, but these will be closed up, when I have finished dabbling with the building.

I have to admit, I am truly delighted with some of these images, and I am still using my small point and shoot digital camera, I do find the night time shots improve when I use my better camera and use manual exposure settings. But for now, these are great !

He hee, the digital camera 'takes no prisoners' though and is my biggest critic ! It clearly shows that the Preiser figures will need some attention to detailing as well as matting them down.

These last few images , are some of my favourites ;o)

Unbelievably, I have used in excess of 200 mtrs of cabling for these lighting looms... and of course the track wiring.

Its probably best, you don't see just untidy things are underneath the layout boards !

Still, as long as the viewing part looks the biz.. who cares ?

We are now on the countdown to Christmas , so I am excited about the imminent delivery of the Br 64 Bubikopf, steam locomotive from Lenz. From what I have seen and heard on the internet, this WILL be the jewel in the crown for Alter Lokschuppen, My Lenz O Gauge Layout.

The next update will hopefully show the 'new arrival' in all her glory...

Even more illumination

Ahh, at last a thaw and an increase in temperature allows me to do some more modelling on Alter Lokschuppen, My Lenz O Gauge Layout.

I have now added some wall lights to the side and one end of the lokshed, these do look rather good ( even if I do say so myself ). Note, these are 'N' Gauge units from Veissmann.
Yet another example where I use items from various scales and put them to good use, these are quite effective and a much better visible size .

Above, one end has a similar wall light added, note the temporary feeds for testing purposes.

Combined with the internal lokshed illumination reveals a nice night time view.

Meanwhile, inside the lokshed, I have started to add more details, pipes & beams, as well as concealing much of the internal Led circuit boards from view.
